Viking Cave Phi Phi Visitor’s Complete Guide

Viking Cave Phi Phi and How To Get There From Phi Phi Island

The Viking cave Phi Phi is a really cool place to visit in which most tourists usually pass it whilst doing a boat tour around the Phi Phi islands. The local Thai people know this cave as Tham Phaya Nak (cool name), this reason it’s called this is because of the strange but sweet paintings that are in the cave. You may have heard of the Viking cave drawings!

In this post, we will go over how to get to the cave, the drawings and the Viking cave nest soup. Furthermore, you won’t need long visiting the cave! The boats just usually stop around 20-metres away and show you the external of it. However, you will be able to get off the boat and do some snorkelling around there, that bit is amazing. Also, you are close to Pileh Lagoon and Maya Bay there so you will more than likely visit them (check out what to do in 3 days on Phi Phi).

How to get to Viking Cave?

The cave is not in the best of positions to get to. So, the only way to really see it is by doing a boat tour around Phi Phi.

You can do a boat tour from Phuket or Krabi to Phi Phi and they should take you to see the Viking Cave during the tour.

You can only really look from the outside. However, the Viking Cave snorkelling is an awesome experience. The fish there are amazing and the water is very clear. Making it one of the best snorkelling locations in the Phi Phi islands.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got snorkelling gear, your boat tour company should provide you with everything you need.

Viking cave Phi Phi drawings

The Viking Cave drawings are very unique. You may have seen photos of these strange drawings on Google. The drawings are drawn all over the cave walls and to be fair it is spectacular the work that’s gone into them! Very artistic.

The drawings are quite historic and very popular amongst the locals.

I never got to see the drawings in the cave but I have looked at a lot of the cool images.

Viking Cave birds nest soup

Phi Phi birds nest soup is something that I only heard of when travelling from Phuket to Phi Phi. I have not tried the swallow nest soup but I have heard it’s a well sought after delicacy. I think this is mainly amongst the Chinese though.

The Thailand swallow nest soup brings in some good money for the Thai locals. It’s not uncommon for the nest soup to be sold at as much as $10,000 a kilo! Crazy, I don’t think I will be buying that on my backpacking budget.

The reasons the swallow nest soup is so popular is that the people who have it believe it has top health properties such as;

  • Iron
  • Potassium
  • Nutrients
  • Vitamins

You will see the Viking cave scaffolding that is used to climb for the swallow nests.

Where to stay for the boat tour

Make sure to check out the best Phi Phi Island Hotels.

Phi Phi Island Village Beach – Hands down one of the most popular and best places on Phi Phi is the Phi Phi island village beach which gets booked up very quick. This amazing accommodation is bungalows on the Phi Phi beach, that have some of the best views on the island.

These amazing bungalows are perfect for honeymoon vacation to Phi Phi or those of you one a sweet holiday break.

U-RIP – The rooms are big, clean and modern with a complimentary minibar and a large balcony with seating to enjoy a glass of brandy whilst the sun goes down. The hotel even offers a type of infinity pool that looks out into the ocean, pretty cool if you ask me.

There is also a good atmosphere at this accommodation on Phi Phi. Everyone has a smile on their face and the U-Rip hotel staff are very friendly and are more than happy to help. There is also shops nearby and some of Phi Phi’s best coffee shops. In addition, I would say this hotel on Phi Phi is perfect for backpackers, honeymooners and family holidays.

Final thoughts

The Viking Cave is a cool place to visit, however, the best thing for me was the snorkelling. It’s epic and the water is perfect!

With an area of about 80 hectares, Gantang Lake is in the center of Jiujiang City. It is a natural lake, and the most attractive place of interest in the city.

Gantang Lake known for its charming scenery is a must to each visitor to Jiujiang.

Gantang Lake was once called Jingxing Lake during the Tang Dynasty, and is renamed to commemorate Li Bo, the Magistrate of Jiangzhou during the Tang dynasty who have built the dike, dredged the lake and constructed the irrigation works. Now there still existed some historic sites, such as Ligong Dike and Sixian Bridge. It is divided into two parts by the dike and the bridge. The divided lakes are now separately called Nanmen Lake in the east of the dike and Gantang Lake in the west.
