How to do the Vang Vieng Zip Lining activity in Laos

The Laos Vang Vieng Zip lining adventure

Vang Vieng, a super cool town with a welcoming atmosphere and a peaceful lifestyle. We visited Vang Vieng for 3 nights. The weather was not great as it was August when we visited this top tourist destination in Laos. But we still managed to make the most of it and check out some of the best things to do in Vang Vieng. if you are travelling from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng or Vientiane to Vang Vieng. The journey is completely worth it. Like the Rock climbing in Vang Vieng this is an awesome activity.

You might have seen blog posts or TripAdvisor reviews that belittle Vang Vieng stating it’s a party town and is fuelled by a drug-culture.

This is completely wrong, or I was walking around for 4 days with my eyes and ears closed (I wasn’t). Vang Vieng is a popular destination for backpackers that are taking the typical travel route, from Vientinane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and finally to Chang Mai or Chang Mai to the south of Laos. In addition to this, I also discovered Vang Vieng is a popular holiday destination for Koreans.

If you are looking for things to do other than tubing, this is it! The zip lining is one of the best things you will experience on your visit to Vang Vieng.

A visit to Vang Vieng is a mega experience, you can have the chance to take part in Vang Vieng’s best activities, explore a wild-west themed town and meet other backpackers from all over the world. Rock climbing and zip lining.Yeah the zip lining in Vang Vieng was a crazy fun packed 45 minutes, “You only get 45 minutes?” yes but it’s worth it. Let’s look what we get with the Vang Vieng zip lining.

How To Get To Vang Vieng?

Travelling around Laos is easy and cheap. To get from Vientiane to to Vang Vieng it only takes roughly (4 hours).

To get from Laung Prabang to Vang Vieng it takes (3 to 7 hours) depending if you take the bus or the van to Vang Vieng from Luang Prabang.

The bus ticket cost from Vientiane to Luang Prabang is around ($4) which is cheap for how many hours you will be travelling across Laos.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Vang Vieng?

The best time to visit Vang Vieng will depend on which season you are visiting this top place to visit in Loas.

The dry season in Laos is from November to March and temperatures are a lot more chilled. So you will sleep a little easier at night due to he cooler weather. This is also a good time to doing hikes etc in vang Vieng.

Do you like hot-hot weather? March to May is the hot season in Loas. By hot it gets very hot. If you are doing the bus trip from Vientiane to Vang Vieng this is going to be a harsh trip. Remember to take plenty of water on this trip.

The wet season isfrom May to October and sometimes rain and monsoon weather can be nasty. You will want to avoid this really! Personally I would just go in hot season if possible and embrace the trip from Vientiane or Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng 😊

How long should I stay in Vang Vieng?

To see the best things then I would recommend staying for 3 nights in Vang Vieng. This way you can do all the best activities and still get chance to chill out.

If you are doing the rock climbing in Vang Vieng, then you will want a night to recover and chill out.

Tourists and backpackers just do 1 or 2 nights in Vang Vieng which is cool if you’re stuck on time. But I recommend 3 nights is how long to stay in Vang Vieng for. Plus, it’s a mega top place to visit in Laos and you don’t want to rush it.

How to do the Vang Vieng zip lining adventure

We started the day with a hotel pickup, which is include in the zip lining package and we soon discovered there was only 2 of us on day trip. “Is it a good or a bad thing when there’s only two people on the day trip? O well”. We then made a ten-minute rocky and butt breaking truck ride to the zip lining base camp, where we were greeted by 10+ staff. We were instantly rigged up with safety gear.

They fitted our zip lining equipment very quick, then we was off.

TUp the mountain to the first zipline. “9 zips our not so great English-speaking guide told us”, that’s what’s included 9 zip line. Okay we’re at the first Vang Vieng zip line.

In total there were 5 of us, two of us and 3 guides. The only little English-speaking guide had banter and liked to shake the bridges as we anxiously made our way through the trees. Cool guy.

The zip lines are all more-or-less connected, hence the Vang Vieng zip lining adventure only taking 45 minutes. You literally unclip off one zip, then you’re clipped onto the beginning of the next zip. Furthermore, each of the epic zip lines takes you through breathtaking views of Vang Vieng. Also, one of the zip lines is a whopping 147 metres long, the longest zip line I have ever been on.

Other things to do on your visit to Vang Vieng

Vang vieng is a really cool place and one of best places to visit in Laos. There isn’t loads of things to do. But here is a list of the best things to do in Vang Vieng.

  • Just a 45-minute walk (or less on bike or moped) from the town is the beginning of the top Vang Vieng trek – the Pha Ngeun viewpoint.
  • The Vang Vieng inner tubing is a really popular activity. It involves lazing down the river whilst drinking alcohol. Hmmmm.
  • The Kaeng Nyui Waterfall is a must see place in Vang Vieng. Just 30 minutes outside of town, this watering hole is a swimmable spot! Which is great due to the hot weather in Laos.
  • Tham Chang Cave – If you are looking to avoid the tourists and want to meet some locals away from the town. Then, hire a bike, ride 10 minutes out of town, and explore the Tham Jang Cave.
  • Because of all the action going on at Than Phu Kham, you may get this one all to yourself, and you can still swim in a blue lagoon, a much less crowded one. Score!

Things to know about the Vang Vieng Zip line

  1. There are 9 zip lines – Like I mentioned there is 9 zip lines and each one varies in height and distance. And each one delivers an adrenaline fuelled rush. Epic.
  2. The biggest zip line – The longest of the Vang Vieng zip lines is 147 metres.
  3. Footwear – I didn’t experience and bd terrain, however on a wet day the bridges can get a little slippy. Therefore, I’d put some comfy trainers on.
  4. Managing your own breaking system – “What the?”. By this I mean on your connection to the zip line, there is a brake that you will pull down on to slow you down at the end of the line. But don’t worry this is quite easy to use and you only have to use it one or two of the ziplines.
  5. Transportation – Your Zip lining in Vang Vieng package will include pickup from you hotel and also drop-off to your hotel. Make sure CONFIRM this when you buy a ticket.
