One thing people usually visit the rice paddies for is the Tegallalang swing. After trekking Mount Batur we were a little tired physically and mentally but we were love adventuring and finding new things to see, so we made it a priority in the day to visit the Tegallalang rice terraces north of Ubud, especially as we were staying in Ubud so it was one straight road for us.

How to get to Tegallalang rice fields from Ubud town centre?
We traveled up from Ubud center and it took us around 20 minutes on a scooter and the road wasn’t that busy around 10 am but it does get busier as the day progresses. It’s also a sweet drive to see how the locals live and how they work the shops and cafes that are not aimed at tourists. You can walk it from the north of Ubud to the Tegallalang rice terraces of Ubud in 2 hours but this is a killer in the heat. You can also get a taxi from Ubud to the terraces for around $10.
One thing I noticed is friendly guys are driving up and down the road asking where your going (as general conversation), they then say the rices terraces are that way and point to the side of a cafe. It does lead to the terraces, however, you have to pass through their coffee shop. So the directions were trying to make a sale of coffee to you. Nevertheless, take advantage of this as it’s free parking and there isn’t much parking available around the Tegalalang rice terraces of Ubud.

during the day, you will be asked by local workers for an entrance fee to the Tegallalang terraces. However, generally, there won’t be anyone there at night. This is not somewhere you want to visit at night in Ubud. How can you enjoy the terraces in the dark?
The best time to visit the rice terraces is between 8-11 am, this is before the sun really starts to beat down and the narrow paths of the rice terraces aren’t overcrowded by other tourists. Also, it will help with parking and photo opportunities.

Yes, you can eat there. We had dinner at the Tegallalang rice terraces cafe and it was cheap but really tasty food. There aren’t many cafes in Ubud that offer these sorts of views though!

The actual opening times of the rice terrace cafe is 24 hours. You can get food here and drink at any time.
- Most of the tourists who have visited the Tegallalang green rice field will sit or stay in the restaurant to see the rice field landscape. However, if you want to approach the rice field, it is recommended to go down and walk in the rice field.
- The Tegallalang rice field is not open and the rice field is open 24 hours a day. However, for the restaurant or cafeteria, the opening hours are regular from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm.

Going down the stairs there is a courtyard and the “cave” of the eleventh century, where you can find sculptures of rock walls and a meditation site, while on the perimeter are a Hindu temple and an impressive pool of sources, excavated in 1954.

The Ubud art market is located near the Royal Palace of Ubud in Puri Saren and is open every day. The rice terraces are one of the coolest things so see in Ubud. You can easily spend a few hours here just exploring the amazing rice paddies and enjoying a go on the swing. You can also taste some of the amazing Luwakee coffee on the rice paddies.
I would hire a scooter and make your way to the rice paddies, this is the most fun way and the cheapest way to travel in Ubud.

We loved Tegalalang rice fields. The scenery was enchanting, the walk was easy to follow, and I didn’t pass whole hordes of tourists while there. The restaurant was crowded and the food so-so, but it had a nice view, and was a good place for my spouse to sit & wait for me while I walked the whole rice field loop. I loved Ubud, the Sangeh Monkey Forrest (not in Ubud, but not far – took great pics; nobody else there except a few guides), Tegalalang, my very early walks around Ubud from our hotel (Ubud Runik – basic, but modern, comfy, inexpensive, only 4 rooms, quiet location off of Jalan Bisma, great location). We are older and didn’t think renting a scooter would be safe for us, so we hired a guide 3 days who was recommended by a cruiser. For 3 days he picked us up from the airport, took us to hotels in Sanur & Ubud, and around the Sanur and Ubud areas and to the port. His name was Dewa Gede (dgrock1140@yahoo.com), He explained everything, spoke great English, had a nice, large car with AC and took us to places we wanted to go, plus to the complex in Ubud where he lived to meet his family, etc.
I fell totally in love with Bali, but for anyone visiting, I’d certainly recommend getting out and about, not just heading to a beach. There is SO much more to see there.
