History of Koko Head Crater Arch

This cool attraction in Oahu has some very interesting history.

Did you know that the military used the summit of Koko Head to build bunkers during World War II – interesting right? Wait there’s more, the popular walking track was once the train track of Koko Head. This army used these tracks to transport goods and supplies up and down the mountain.

When the war finished the Hawaii National Guard and air force took over the base etc. However, this was later passed on to the City of Honolulu.

Fast forward to now, and the area is known as Koko Head Regional Park.

How to get to the Koko Head Hike?

The best and easiest way to get to Koko Head is by jumping on the bus there. Here’s the good news, there are no transfers on the bis, it’s just a 40-minute ride from Waikiki to Hanauma Bay sign. From here, you just need to cross the road to begin your hike up Koko Head.

Please remember, Hanauma Bay is popular amongst tourists, so expect the buses to get crowded as the day passes by! If I was you, I would get to the bus stop as early as possible!

How many steps are there?

There are not as many steps as the popular stairway to heaven Oahu – but there are quite a few! The actual number of the steps is 1,048 – sound a lot? This awesome climb takes you at least 1200 ft above Kawaii Kai. When you reach the top you will have incredible views of Hanauma Bay. It really is quite spectacular!

Is it dangerous?

Yes, you could say it’s slightly dangerous! The trail is steep in parts and gets very slippy. This is why you should take your time and be sure to wear fitted trainers with grips. This will help you stay on your feet in those slippery areas.
